The National AfterSchool Association has adopted standards that address Healthy Eating and Physical Activity in Out-of-School Time Programs. These standards tackle staff roles and training, parent engagement, program support, and a host of other information about practices to implement in these programs.
The California physical activity guidelines define ten strategies that promote a quality afterschool program. A few important guidelines are afterschool environments encourage development, create policies that encompass all guidelines, allow many opportunities for safe indoor and outdoor activities, and create a schedule to evaluate as needed.
The USDA first launched the Smart Snack standards, effective in schools across the country, during the 2014-2015 school year. The standards are designed to exchange unhealthy food options with healthier snacks and beverages sold, including the vending machines, for children and teens.
NAA represents the National After School Association that has adopted standards concerning physical activity. NAA emphasizes the importance that children reach 60 minutes of physical activity a day, which includes both moderate and vigorous activities. An important guideline proposed by NAA states that 20% of an after school program schedule should be dedicated to physical activity. NAA also encourages staff training, social support, program support, and environmental support to help facilitate the physical activity standards.
Move More North Carolina is a set of recommended standards for after-school programs regarding physical activity in children. Move More North Carolina strives to provide children with more opportunities for physical activity in after-school programs in forms of games, sports, and outdoor activities. Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day, and after school programs can support children in reaching this recommendation.
