Healthy Afterschool Activity and Nutrition Documentation

The Healthy After-school Activity and Nutrition Documentation (HAAND) is a tool designed to help after-school programs leaders evaluate how well their programs meet current state and national policy recommendations in after-school settings. The HAAND also allows after-school programs to identify areas for potential improvement.

The first section collects basic information on the program like location of the program and the number of children attending that day. This section also includes questions related to the type of snack served and the physical activity opportunities in the program.

The two other sections of the HAAND instrument consist of the Healthy After-school Program Index for Physical Activity scale (HAPI-PA) and the HAPI-Nutrition scale (HAPI-N). The two scales consist of 24 items, organized under 7 domains:

  • Written policy
  • Child involvement
  • Screen times or access to vending machine
  • Schedule of physical activity or snack quality
  • Training
  • Curriculum
  • Evaluation
